I don't understand how being loosely related to a violent drunk would detract from you doing a good job as a police officer, in fact it would probably be a good thing to have more officers with this kind of experience. I have been on the receiving end of "advice"from a patronising young pc who's only experience in life was school and college.

If a serving police officer's family member starts to get into trouble do they have to resign?

It couldnt possibly be that he at some time has given your address as his own?Thereby giving you a close association with him.Think there is a book out about how to be accepted for the Police.Perhaps you could consult that. Its very strange to fail in this way when they could have failed you on something less controversial.Other thing that springs to mind is if he has ever assaulted a police Officer-dont think that would go in your favour.
  • Its funny how you should say that it was only last week that we got a letter at our address for him from the inland revenue, i rang the inland revenue they said ask your brother how long he has used your address we dont even see him and dont want to. I have wrote to them asking to tell me as to how long they have had my address for him it is the only letter we have had, it just seemed funny how after being rejected for the police that this comes.

Maybe he has been registering things to your address, might be worth checking and seeing if they can re-assess you.

can't you go to citizens advice to see if you are being unfairly discriminated against?

I think if he has done this (been giving your address) it will regard him as a much closer associate than he is,very possibly reason you were turned down,(still doesnt alter the fact the police shouldnt have sprung this on you so late). Hope others can give you more advice.CAnt think where to start, obviously maybe solicitor.I dont know how hard it will be to disprove it.Do you have any legal advice with your home insurance? or try the citizens advice bureau.sorry-allready been mentioned.Perhaps inland revenue would tell you when he gave your address.Perhaps a declaration to the effect that he doesnt (and hasnt ever?)lived with you might do the trick.Perhaps there is legal forum you could post on.Discrimination only comes in certain criteria-dont believe this is one of them for legal purposes.

My understanding of the application/vetting procedure is that all persons mentioned on the application form would be checked off against the Police National Computer. A check would then be completed on the address to see if it is known to Police and then an Electoral register check would be done, and again all persons listed would be checked. In your shoes , I would write a letter to the Head of Recruitment and detail accurately the realtionship or not, that you have with this person and ask them for feedback/reason why your application was unsuccessful. Good luck
  • Thanks for all your replys, i have wrote to recruitment but have no joy, they have more or less said its data protection cant say anything, although it wouldnt be too bad but i know the reason why i have failed with them calling me in for an interview to do with him.
I am going to citizens advice tomorrow its so hard to accept.
    Thanks Again

If they've quoted the Data Protection Act at you, doesn't that mean you can also use that to request your file under the same act? (It won't get you a speedy answer as it takes time, but might be worth it - ?)
