change car or not - how to decide

I'm trying to decide if I should keep my present car or replace it.

I've had my current car several years, it's been well maintained and is very very reliable which is critical to me as I'm self-employed. It does have a large engine (3.2 litre).

If I replace it, I'll be buying a secondhand car with a largely unknown history
I don't place much faith in warrenties on these having been caught out before.

I can't figure out a basis to decide between keeping the present one and accept the fuel consumption for a 3.2 engine or replace it for an unknown quantity.
