Tulip12 I'd post your query over in the Insurance Board for a wider/fuller answer.

Ok thanks for that, will do

Thank you for all your helpful replies,
We have found Admiral to be one of the cheapest quotes, does anyone have any experience with this company.

Admiral are great until it's time to pay out on own insurance claims. Had to claim on my own insurance as unknown driver wrote off my car, so they were less than helpful, but while working as a claims advisor they seemed to sort out the claims rather quickly if they had someone to claim from. However I have prior to this I have had insurance with the company one way or another for the past 6 years or so.

Have you tried Elephant? Although it's the sister company, they still compete with each other.

My son is nearly 22 and about to purchase his first car. We know the insurance is going to sting but just wondered if anyone knows of the cheapest way to go about this. I already run my own car, would it be a good idea to register the new car in my name also with my son as an additional driver. Thank in advance

I don't see a problem with this???? Fronting????

I had my main insurance policy on a kitcar and my daily commuter was insured in my mums name up until 2006.

As long as he's not buying a 2 litre hot hatch or something stupid, it's a non issue.

What I do object to is those who do exactly what I just mentioned...... New drivers should NOT be driving around in performance vehicles!! My friends Rover 200 1.4 was written off by a young/new driver (19 years old) in a Peugeot 309 GTI (insured by his dad) being driven on a residential street past a school at over 85mph!! (according to the Police report).

If he buys something stupid, you should do the responsible thing and refuse to help with the insurance.

Be very careful if you decide to do this.

If your son has an accident or the car is stolen the insurance company will investigate the claim and will find out that the car belongs to your son, but insured in your name for the sole purpose to get cheaper insurance and they will take a very dim view of this.

It is also possible that any claim will be rejected and the policy voided, in addition you would have a black mark against your name in the insurance database which would affect any future insurance policy you wish to take out.

This may sound very doom and gloom, but this is the reality now - insurance companies have no obligation to pay out on a claim if they feel that the policyholder has tried to defraud them, and fronting is a type of fraud.

If your son wants to get a car then he will need to factor the insurance cost into his budget. The alternatives could prove very costly.

Tell him to get married. It reduces the risk apparently.

I too would be wary of getting him a policy in your name, even as a main driver. If he does have to claim, it will go on your record.

Thanks for all your helpful replies, great thread. he (son) decided to go with Admiral as this was the cheapest by a few hundred pounds, hopefully things will be ok. Interestingly by adding other family members as additional drivers this also reduced the premium considerably.

If he went to confused.com then Admiral would be cheapest.... They own the website.

Ignoring the legal technicality of who the main driver would actually be, your son won't be earning any no claims bonus if he is a named/secondary driver.
Tesco and others do give the named driver the benefit of ncb. My daughter, 18, was on my policy and we were surprised to see that when she took out her own insurance on a new peug 107 that they had given her 3 years ncb which brought the cost down to £275ish.
