Try paying 3p less for the item and see how far you get!0

While I agree that they should give you change, thinking about it, why should there be an obligation for them to provide change if there is no obligation on the customer to provide to correct money.0

there isnt, but if they accept a £20 note in acceptance of a contract knowing the debt to be £19.99, then they are accepting that they will owe back £.01.
A shop wouldnt go very far if it never provided change so they do it out of customBack by no demand whatsoever.0 -
Tonite I was visiting my father in hospital and my daughter asked to get him a choccy bar as a treat on way in... I only had £1 in my pocket, the machine said change available... she chose a choccy that was 72p... I put the £1 coin in and got 30p back....

actually this happened up my local shop a couple of nights ago.
the total came to £13.07 and i gave him £15.00. he realised he didnt have enough change in till so asked if I had the odd 7 pence, I didnt, I only had 3 pence which he said was ok and gave me £2 change.
and over the forty years I have worked in retail - whenever this has happened the shop has taken the loss!
and if i hadnt any copper at all - I am sure he would have given me the £2 change! not worth the hassle of cancelling the till, putting the goods back - and losing that customer!0 -
There is no legal obligation for a shop to give change at all. In reality they all do of course - but the law if not their customer's goodwill is on their side if they insist that the customer bears any shortfall.
In a legal tender situation (which this isn't) you are obliged to tender the exact sum due. No change permitted0 -

the shop can enforce that rule if they want

My local £1 shop has some odds n ends inc. Stuff from Woolworths. These are often priced with a 99p at the end BUT you are lucky to get the penny!!
Also they had 99p price marked Foxes blackcurrant n liquorice BUT still asked for £1 though!
They seem to do whatever they like!0
