UK JOb Market 2010

Sadly, manufacturing is still continuing to decline. We used to have a car industry, steel industry, pottery industry, ship building, not to mention electrical white and brown goods made by names like Hoover, Belling and Ferguson. Where is all of this stuff made now?, well the simple answer is, not in the UK!.
Just take a look around your home, from the Furniture, TV Set and Computer to the car on your driveway and the coal in your bunker, and see how much of it is wholly made / produced in the UK.
So, with little manufacturing left, and with more and more companies calling in the Administrators every day where do you expect the improvement and new jobs to come from??. As far as I can see, even clerical and call centres work is being moved offshore and the leisure industry isn't exactly thriving either.
I would imagine the only sector still thriving is that of the bailiff!"Dont expect anybody else to support you, maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have a wealthy spouse, but you never know when each one, might run out" - Mary Schmich0 -

I would be interested in hearing your experiences, opinion of the UK job market in 2010.
I'm finding the market a lot worse than 2009.
I was made redundant Sep 2009. I had 6 interviews in 2009.
2010 I have had 1 interview.
I come from the IT sector. I'm looking for any work from bus driver to manager and everything in between. I'm just not seeing the quality of job, or getting any good feedback or vibes from my applications. I'm not being fussy. Will accept starting salary 15k.
I've been working voluntarily since February to keep me in a work ethic. Develop new skills, meet people, keep me sane, build a portfolio. I completed my BSc 2009, Certification 2008. I'm 42 with 25 years work history. Excellent CV and references.
One thing I have noticed is that a lot of the fall back manual trades are gone. Seems to be sales, customer support, care workers and management.
Regards,
Dog.
Hi there,
Where abouts in the country are you based?
Like youself, I have been out of work since Sept 09.
I live in Aberdeen, and there had been a dearth of jobs in
my trade ( CNC Programmer/Setter Machinist )
However the last month, and particularly the last two weeks things have really began to look up.
Had my first interview in eight months on Thursday past, and have had various contact about other jobs also.
I would not say my phone has been red hot but at least I now feel that I have not given out the wrong number!
Keep the chin up, and good luck with the job search.

I have been actively searching for jobs since january this year, i have mostly been looking for call centre/customer service/receptionist/admin assistant desk type jobs...i'm starting to think that they are almost non-existent! For every 40 or so applications if i'm lucky i may get back one response saying they were overwhelmed with applicants.
In terms of interviews i've had 4 this year, 2 were for a telesales job *sigh* and one was for market research at a call center, never heard back after the interviews despite the fact that i have over a years call center experience.
So as of about a month ago i decided to switch the jobs i was looking for and applied for one care job...just one...next thing i know i got called for an interview, passed it and now waiting for CRB check to be finalised so that i can get my start date *whew*.0 -

I can't even apply for the carer or cleaner jobs because they are miles from where I live and there is no transport early in the morning or in the evening, or it's (cleaning) perhaps 1or 2 hours a day 5-7 days a week - almost as much as, if not more, spent on fares compared to what is earned. The carer positions either ask for driving licence, or unsocial hours which are not possible with the lack of transport. ... Can't afford driving lessons, couldn't afford a car even if I could drive....
I even got turned down for a voluntary position this week - the description wasMy reply from them - quote: I am afraid that due to a large number of female volunteer applicants this year, we are no longer taking any new female bookings for this year.
I've only had 1 interview this year. I had 3 last year. I think I've made more applications so far this year than I made for the whole of last year. I've recently been advised to leave my degree off my CV and application forms. Oh well, perhaps it will cheer me up and jobs will magically appear when I have to go out and scrub other people's kid's graffiti off the walls while I'm still claiming JSA.
I really understand as a non-driver (and OH). We aren't rural but bus services aren't much better. Even admin jobs often say 'driver preferred' without any apparent reason. Very frustrating. I have had one interview this year - and have one in a few weeks (fingers crossed!!) - but many many more no replies/rejections. I agree that degree doesn't seem to help at all either. I'm not even entitled to JSA!
Shocking that the voluntary post responded like that - I'm sure somewhere more in need of your help would be grateful. Good luck to all with the search.:money:0
