UK JOb Market 2010

Hi,

I would be interested in hearing your experiences, opinion of the UK job market in 2010.

I'm finding the market a lot worse than 2009.
I was made redundant Sep 2009. I had 6 interviews in 2009.
2010 I have had 1 interview.

I come from the IT sector. I'm looking for any work from bus driver to manager and everything in between. I'm just not seeing the quality of job, or getting any good feedback or vibes from my applications. I'm not being fussy. Will accept starting salary 15k.

I've been working voluntarily since February to keep me in a work ethic. Develop new skills, meet people, keep me sane, build a portfolio. I completed my BSc 2009, Certification 2008. I'm 42 with 25 years work history. Excellent CV and references.

One thing I have noticed is that a lot of the fall back manual trades are gone. Seems to be sales, customer support, care workers and management.

Regards,

Dog.

I think IMO it will get considerably worse when you take into account the coming public sector job losses and with the new lot of school/college/uni leavers coming onto the market.

You're right about the lack of skilled type of roles, all I ever see on recruitment sites are sales and management roles and when I look at Totaljobs in the telecommunications section there are tonnes of non-telecom (tech roles) jobs and I guess it's the same in the other sectors.

Good luck finding a job, I'm still looking since xmas and I've had one interview and an assessment day so far - i'm almost clinically insane and I'm starting to get really really frustrated beyond belief.

An increase in sales and marketing jobs is a good sign. These people are often brought back in to generate sales and market potential products. After this comes engineering and manufacturing and other skilled jobs, which can only be brought back in when a company has orders...
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • I guess it is a good sign but when I notice sales roles the majority of them are to sell B2B services as usual and nothing to do with physical productivity.

Same where i am, its either cleaning, care jobs or jobs that are high up the food chain eg executive jobs that require x amount of experience and/or qualifications which isnt good for me who doesnt have a big qualification, never went to uni and has onyl had retail experience.

Lol, I feel your mood - it's emanating from my laptop screen. I can't tell you how bad I feel right now in not even being able to get an interview, I feel useless!

Got no car, partner's out with the little one in it, it's raining, how much more of this can I take - should I go down the pub?

Ironicly, last night I downloaded Gorillaz's track 'Melancholy Hill' - lol, how apt.

The trades are still there but with the housing market crash, there's less need for them as fewer new houses are being built. Couple that with the fact that every man and his dog jumped on the bandwagon and that's why you see fewer jobs. Still plenty of manual trade jobs about but they're in engineering so I don't think that's what you had in mind.

You say you're not fussy but then go on to say you're not seeing a certain quality of job and are prepared to work for as low as £15k which contradicts what you say. There's plenty of jobs, just a huge swathe of them will be under £15k.

I've never had a problem finding a job, even through the recessions in the 80's and 90's because I'm truly not fussy. Even though I have several technical qualifications, I've worked in food factories humping chicken offal into a mincing machine 10hrs a day for a few quid an hour (pre-NMW) because that's what happened to be available.

I think the market is very poor. I have the added problem of being in a rural area with poor public transport, and am a non-driver. I can't even apply for the carer or cleaner jobs because they are miles from where I live and there is no transport early in the morning or in the evening, or it's (cleaning) perhaps 1or 2 hours a day 5-7 days a week - almost as much as, if not more, spent on fares compared to what is earned. The carer positions either ask for driving licence, or unsocial hours which are not possible with the lack of transport. (also frustrating is that I can't apply to go on the housing list for the nearest big town because i have no job/local connection there, and until I can move and have better transport and more jobs which I can apply for, I really struggle to find jobs to apply for and am unlikely to get a job - spiteful circle there. I'm on the house exchange lists, but it seems no one wants to move from a town into a rural area) Can't afford driving lessons, couldn't afford a car even if I could drive....

I even got turned down for a voluntary position this week - the description was
    The opportunity
To research a long list of sub groups (Schools, Community Groups etc) which need collating on and Exel Spreadsheet
My reply from them - quote: I am afraid that due to a large number of female volunteer applicants this year, we are no longer taking any new female bookings for this year.

I've only had 1 interview this year. I had 3 last year. I think I've made more applications so far this year than I made for the whole of last year. I've recently been advised to leave my degree off my CV and application forms. Oh well, perhaps it will cheer me up and jobs will magically appear when I have to go out and scrub other people's kid's graffiti off the walls while I'm still claiming JSA.

there is a pub and a school. No vacancies. And if there were, they would go to people that were already pub customers or friends of the owners, and to parents of children at the school or friends of the people already working there.
