Redundancy twice in 6 months :(

Options
So it's happened - what we thought... OH has just been made redundant for the 2nd time in 6 months :(.

First time was in November last year and it took him until mid January to get this other job now they've got no work and have laid people off with OH being one of them.

It's really knocked him back and he's not really said a lot since Wednesday when it happened. He's loathed to sign on again - he hated it last time saying they made him feel stupid at the job centre. He's applied for a couple of jobs and gone to sign on with an agency today but I'm not holding out much hope with the agency tbh.

Is there any way of finding out an agency's success rate? Can you still put a claim in for JSA while signed onto an agency and just tell them when you work and loose that weeks money or do you have to sign off and back on again?

You can certainly sign on for JSA while you are registered with an agency.

If you actually get temporary work then yes you'd have to sign off while you were working and then re-sign on when the temporary work finished. Obviously if the agency gets you a permanent job then you'd just finish claiming and that would be it....

    Good luck with his job-hunting.

What field of work does he do out of interest? I've just been made redundant (in IT), I'm still young(ish), single and have savings so didn't think I'd be too fussed but it is surprisingly de-moralising and I'm already bored after a week! Got an interview on wednesday though so hoping for the best. Wish your OH the same.

The success rate of an agency is measured in how many job vacancies they fill, not how many people they place in jobs. It doesn't matter whether they fill 50 vacancies when they had 100 or 1000 people on their books.

A kind of exception would be where the agency company has a contract with DWP/Employment Service to place people from the unemployment register into jobs.

He was a Patient Transport Services driver (ambulances). He can do a bit of allsorts really - warehouse, driving, transport management, that sort of thing so hopefully the agency will be able to find him some work in one of those areas.

Hope your job hunting goes well xxx

One agency isn't enough, he must register with at least 3. Once 'on the books' he simply must be 'in-their-face' friendly, first name terms with whoever he's assigned to, and ring every Monday & Tuesday to see if they have anything.

I've found some agencies slightly reluctant to fully register me until they "have a job", then I'm expected to trot down immediately and spend 2 hours going through the interview/test/registration process. Decided first options will be those who will register me properly then call as soon as anything comes in (though they must expect me to make a nuisance of myself).

It is very disheartening to be laid off, but I think maybe he's taking it personally (& worrying), but look at it this way, he did manage to get another job last time (albeit for 6 months). He can do it again. He only felt stupid because he allowed himself to, his confidence had no doubt taken a HUGE knock but he's got to just rise above that as best he can.
    Good luck.
Some large companies still have their own 'temp register', has he called any, even if they don't he can ask HR which agency they use.

Thank you for taking the time to reply and for the kind words. I know what you say is right regarding he can find another job - it's just getting over the initial slap in the face and picking yourself up again. :A

He's just signed up to another agency so that's 2 now. He seems to have 'perked' up a bit in the last couple of days. The problem he has at the moment is that a lot of places where he would look for work around here - warehouses, factories, foundries, etc are on shut down this week for Whitsun. But that's only a week and he will still be looking where are open.

well someone must be smiling down on us at the moment. OH went for a job interview today and got a phone call this afternoon offering him the job!! So less than 2 weeks out of work unlike the 2 months last time round.
