TT?
Use your debit card, it's free. Credit Cards will have a handling fee of about 2.5%.0 -
Can you not just pay using our debit card. Never purchased a car with a debit card but have made some purchases of an equivalent value at no extra cost.0

I paid for my last 2 cars using a debit card with no problems.0 -

I'm too generous for my own good. So what do you fancy, a Porsche or a Ferrari?0 -
Large transactions can trigger security mechanisms that stop the debit card payment going through.
Bought a car at BCA auction and paid with a VISA debit card.
Had to pay several hundred pounds at the rostrum, typed in the PIN, and the transaction went through. An hour later, tried to pay the rest at the Cashier window, and they told me the first payment was withheld, with no reason. As they did not receive the money, they refused to do a refund, despite my holding a printed slip saying it did go through. So got a signed note from the head cashier to state the money was not received, and ended up paying the whole lot using another debit card. Pure luck the second card had enough cash.
Three days later, the first payment went through after all,
having logged on to check that account every day.
Had to fax BCA the signed note before they would believe me.
After checking, they found the payment, three days late.
Both debit cards had been used for small amounts for years, but the first card had never been used for large transactions.
At least I was not overseas, with only one card to pay for everything.
So if you think you can buy a car and use it that day, don't be too sure.
The credit card company doesn't pay the merchant straightaway, so they are less likely to block the transaction. With debit cards, the money is actually handed over, so they have to be more stringent.0 -
With regards to the previous post my experience is it either goes through flawlessly or it requests that they call the bank for authorisation, never had an experience like described.
Garage I bought my current car in said that their machine will process up to £40,000 on cards of customers of their merchant provider (Bank of Scotland) without asking for extra authorisation :eek::eek::eek:0 -
Our machine is just random. Though for some reason 9 times out of 10 its Lloyds TSB cards that need the authorisation phone call.0
