Anglian windows quote

Good evening,

Sorry to ask a stupid question that seemingly has been asked over and over but we've contacted four companies for double glazing though our builders and Anglian have come up with the best quote. However, is this good?

We have two 5-part bays, then 12 other windows required (most in two parts, if that's the correct terminology) plus they included an aluminium bi-fold door, measuring just under 2 metres (I'd love to say 6 feet or two yards but I understand we are metric now!).

Total is around £13,000 - can I have your thoughts? The other companies were Everest (what a laugh - started at £50k then came straight down to £20k), a small local company that our builder usually uses (although after about a month we have had no quote and he is not impressed) and Anglia Home Improvements.

Your thoughts are much appreciated.

Best wishes,

William

    As Anglian are nationwide and also do driveways, kitchens, conservatories etc i.e. everything related to home improvement, do they actually manufacture and fit the windows themselves or via sub contract? Many local uPVC window companies order windows and doors from larger factories and provide a fitting service, therefore the products are much the same.
    These large firms are now mainly sales agents and get someone else to do the work. Providing you get internally beaded windows with multi point locks then uPVC windows are much the same.
    Look in the local directory or ask your neighbours who did their windows, get a recommendation and at least 4 quotes, then haggle some more.
  • Thanks, Paddcomp, for that.

    We did the deed today - 12 windows, 1 back door and two 5 part bays, just over £9,000.

    He seemed a really nice guy and we are pleased....I think!

    Thanks again for the two quick replies.

    Best wishes,

    William

    I'd definitely say you've done the right thing. Stay away from Anglian - and the rest - they're unscrupulous sharks!

    Not sure if all Anglian Windows offices are the same, but...

    We were thinking of getting our windows done. Anglian Windows man offered us £12000 for all our windows and doors, including several dubious tactics:

    1. Starting with a price of over £25000 and then introducing various "discounts".

    2. Quoting misleading prices from trade catalogues for doors;

    3. Claiming we would make our money back as the value of our house would go up, and we would save on heating [in fact, we would only save max £200 a year on heating...]

    4. Claiming they had a sale ending that day, and we would not get the same price again unless we signed up while he was in the house;

    5. Claiming he was using his friends & family voucher for us.

    Knowing we could cancel within 7 days, we signed the contract. We then contacted 2 local companies recommended on which.co.uk. The first was quite pushy, and offered us a quote of around £9500, excluding doors. The second offered us a quote for around £10000, including doors; said that it would be "sacrilege" to get our wooden windows replaced while we they worked; and pointed out that we could rescue a failing fanlight without replacing it.

    Naturally, we cancelled by email, getting confirmation from Anglian's legal department.

    Then (the best bit) the salesman phoned my elderly mum, begging her to say she was still considering, because that way he would get his bonus. He also said he would make sure we got our deposit back, and told her they hadn't even taken it: she could check her account to confirm this. Of course, her account was untouched: the money had come from my account.

    Am staggered by the shamelessness with which someone could seek to exploit a kind old woman.
