Advice for confused mum re repaying tuition fees

I need help to understand all of this, haven't a clue where to start.
I'll try to be brief;
My son started Uni in September/October, he was ill when he started and became increasingly worried and stressed due to the Student Finance Company debacle; missed lectures when he couldn't afford public transport to get to Uni (an hour away) so became more stressed and worried about catching up. He ended up not going back after the christmas break and I eventually got him to the Drs. in February when he was diagnosed with severe depression. We kept his personal tutor informed through all this.
He's just received a letter from the university saying that they have been informed he is withdrawing and talking about intercalation, no one has been in touch now for a few months to see how he is and if he's repeating in September (which is how it was left) so this letter was a complete surprise.
Thing is they're talking about repayment of tuition fees etc. I understand that they are entitled to do this as he wasn't there but he hasn't a bean to his name so how can he repay?
I've no idea what 'intercalation' is and don't want to get in touch with the uni until I know what I'm talking about IYKWIM, my son is a lot better but not really up to dealing with all this complicated stuff just yet.
Can anyone help please?

I'm assuming you mean get onto the Uni on Tuesday?
We didn't think to contact anyone apart from the personal tutor to be fair, we were just so intent on helping him get through this we really didn't think about anything else!
He's obviously not getting money from anywhere now so they'll have to wait for repayment - it's just another worry when he was starting to do so well0 -
What funding has he actually received?0

If he received funding for all three semester and he's only attended for one then you may find that he's in trouble. He should have informed the SLC if you haven't then you must pay that money back before he'll get funding for next year.0
