Browsing stalls, despite Internet connection

Hi all.
This one's got me stumped, despite a fair amount of Googling.
The web browsers (both IE8 and Firefox 3.6) on a Vista-fuelled PC both "lose the ability to browse" (for want of a more technical phrase) around 30-40 minutes after startup. Pages try to load, but never do, yet a 404 error never appears either. Rebooting resolves the issue for another 30-40 minutes.
Internet connection is maintained, as proven by pinging. Instant Messaging and iTunes store are still fully functional throughout.
Any ideas?

If I were to hazard a guess I would say your Internet Provider (IP) is throttling bandwidth. Had a similar problem with BT and SKY but since moved to PlusNet and the connection is perfect. When a connection is throttled, they can limit the use of browsing whilst other applications that need the internet would work fine. Little bit of selective limiting!0

Thanks Devin, but afraid not.
I'm typing to you on "this PC", while "the one with issues" is alongside. Both are connected to the same router, and this one's doing fine.0 -
you dumped your windows temp folder out and defragged the computer recently? also possiability you have some nice malware on there you should try malware bytes i'm sure alienrik be along with the info for you where to pick it all up etc0

Hi Basil.
It's been about about a fortnight ago now since "housekeeping" (Avast, MalwareBytes, Ad-aware, Disk Cleanup, Defrag ...), but sure, it's worth doing now, just so as to rule out these issues.
Thanks.0 -
I now have this same problem. I can open 2 tabs in IE8 but then no more will open. Just says connecting and then an error message. If I close down one of the already open tabs, the new one loads but then the same thing happens.
Any suggestions?0 -
Hi BCL.
Nope, I'm no further forward with this one, despite carrying out all of the "housekeeping".
(No malware/spyware, plus defragging done, etc.)
Any fresh ideas?0 -
Please open malwarebytes, goto LOGS and post the WHOLE of the last log
then Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD THIS VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/2894/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log):idea:0 -
Wireless, if so, try wired when it fails.
Disable ad-aware, and avast web shield temporarily when it happens!!

I've discovered if i open another tab, it usually loads but it's a bit messy with more tabs opened than needed and half of them stuck on "connecting". I've noticed today that it doesn't seem to be happening so maybe the last overnight auto-update corrected whatever it was.0
