Nat West want 3 digit code from back of card!

I got a promotion through from NatWest and when I rang I had to have the 3 digit code off the back of the card. But I'd cut up the card for security! Of course they know everything about me, probably including my shoe size, so it's a little sharp insisting on this code, I think. I had to wait till they'd sent me new cards but they said they'd put a note on my file that I cold have the offer. The cards came through today, 2 days after the offer ended and, of course, there's no note on my file and they probably can't give me the 0% offer. They're going to listen to the original call and see if I was told they'd hold the offer but I have sinking feeling they'll call back and say no.
Surely this can't be a ploy to get customers to hang on to the card and put themselves in the way of temptation! Surely not!
I cut up the card thinking it would be safer as we'd been burgled once and I certainly don't want to keep it in my bag and spend on it!
So is this normal practise or is it sharp practise?
thanks

I have noticed lately that this has become part of the 'security procedures' so it isn't just you who has experienced it0

It's not an unreasonable request from a card company to get information from the card itself...0

its only a 3 digit code, not like they are asking for the full card details. Natwest should come through if the call was recorded0

It's normal practise for credit card companies to ask for the 3 digits on the back especially if your looking to do a balance transfer. Everytime you use the card online they normally ask for the last 3 numbers as if someone had your front details they won't be able to use it anywhere online with out the back 3 numbers. So it's extra fraud protection. If someone you don't know ask for it don't give it as If the bank call you they have all your details where as if you phone them it's to prove it's you. Hope that helps0

The whole point of that number is to prove you have the card in your possession and you should give it on any CNP (card-holder not present) transaction.
Not sure where you got the idea that you should not give it to anyone.Conjugating the verb 'to be":
-o I am humble -o You are attention seeking -o She is Nadine Dorries0
