Video editing software

I'm fed up of transferring my camcorder recordings to video tape and want to start putting them onto PC and then burning onto DVD's.
I have a digital camcorder which came with a wire link and software which I loaded on to the PC. But the image on the screen is really poor and the software doesn't seem to do much (i.e. no sign of editing etc).
I presumably need a better software package - any recommendations? Do I also need a graphics/TV card in the PC - as far as I'm aware, my PC is nothing special - it was just a standard Dell Dimension. Any recommendations for a decent card?
Many thanks

I am not a techie type person so I may not be answering your question! I connected my videocam via a firwire and used a software programme that came with windowsxp-movie maker. It has loads of editing facilities, you can chop, split and add soundtracks and all sorts. I had good fun with it. I now use pinnacle studio which is a very similar thing as well. I have quite a new pc with loads of memory and space available though. I do know that editing takes an awful lot of space up so make sure you have enough although if not i have seen some fairly cheap external hard drives about. sorry if its not what you want0
