Jobseekers Allowance? In between Full-Time Education

Hi Everyone,

This is my first thread so apologies for any noob mistakes.

Im graduating from University in June 2010 and I will be starting a new Full-Time course at another Uni in September.

I was wondering whether it was possible to claim jobseekers allowance during this summer period (June-September) whilst im between courses because I will not be in Full Time education as I would have graduated.

Many Thanks for any help.

(The Direct Gov website was completely unhelpful)

Will you be available for, and seeking, work?
  • Yes I will be,

Just wondering whether they may say ' you have a confirmed place on a course ' or ' temporary / seasonal job seeking doesnt count '

    Thanks again !

If you are available for and seeking work, you will qualify for JSA for the period between courses.

You need to check when your university course officially finished. I graduated in the July but was unable to claim JSA until 1st Sep, as the academic year was still running. I think the job centre can check term dates with the university but you might want to check as well.

Which university were you at? September is very late for an undergrad term to end.

Assuming you are not on an unusual course, the term dates should be on the uni website.

I agree. Mine says end of term is June 18th. (although officially finished in April - 1st year with no exams)

Strictly speaking you would still be classed as in full time education. JSA can't be claimed for the summer break unless you have children.

JSA can be claimed during the Summer vacation if you have finished one course and are waiting to start a new course, obviously as long as you are available and actively seeking work during this period. It does not matter if the work you are looking for is temporay work until your new course starts.
You are not entitled to JSA until the day after the University states that your course officially ends. However, you can claim JSA in advance of this date; the Law states you can claim JSA up to 3 months prior to your actual date of claim but I would suggest that you phone the Contact Centre about a week before the date from which you want to claim and stipulate that you want your JSA claim to start from ??????, the day after your official end of course date.
    Hope this clarifies your position.
