Economical commuting car/bike advice needed please.

Hi,

I am after some advice about purchasing a new car or motorbike. I am shortly going to be moving house and subsequently will be commuting 110miles each way, most days. I currently have a sporty bike which would be to uncomfortable to travel on, which I am selling for £2000.

What would be a good option? Economical, cheap to run etc. I have thought about buying a Honda Deauville but I am researching cars too for around £2500.

Any advice gratefully received.

Thank you!

    Hi

Don't envy you doing that distance on a bike every day! With that sort of mileage on a bike, comfort will be a priority. The Deauville is a good bike, comfy, nice screen to keep the wind off, shaft drive and panniers. The build quality is pretty decent too. Might be worth a look at something like an older K-series BMW. They can certainly take the miles.

Thanks. The only reason I'm even considering the bike option is that I will be travelling via Severn bridge which is free for motorbikes.

Think I'm going off the bike idea. Any advice on cars that would suit?

Motorways? Anything diesel (1.9 / 2.0tdi) with 6 gears. Thinking either early VAGs (Golf TDi, BMW320d, possibly an Audi a3) or you will get a newer Vauxhall / Ford for that price. For the mileage you are doing is it not worth upping your budget and getting a better / more reliable car.

And I would seriously argue against using a bike as your primary form of transport for 220 miles a day. Its so tiring riding a bike, you have to be constantly on the look out, you can relax a little more in a car :)
