Your absolutley fine driving with your old style driving licence.
What they will most likely want is
Your driving license, that shows that you can drive,
Some photo ID that proves that you are you (your passport will be good for this !)
Your credit card - to run through the machine if any extras become due.

    All in all, no problems.

You need an IDP. In the USA an IDP is a requirement.

I've just ordered my IDP today for when I move to Canada. Check out the Green Flag or RAC website and search for International Driving Permit and you'll find forms to print out there.

It costs £5.50 and the Green Flag address is FREEPOST.

You need to send photocopies of your passport (the photo page), your driving license (the counterpart and BOTH sides of your photo license), a postal order for £5.50 and the IDP form.

Don't bother with AA, it's £7.50 there because they add on a £2.00 'processing fee'.

Should be with you in 5 working days it says. I've sent off for mine today, you can also post date the form ONLY UP TO 3 MONTHS before your date of departure though.

The IDP is valid for a year.

    LOL no probs. :)

USA is a country where an IDP is required, so for the sake of a fiver i'd say it's worth the investment.

    deloren

I think that you may be mistaken in this,

I've travelled to the US repeatedly in the last 10 years, hiring a car each time and I've never needed a IDP - infact until I read your post I'd never even heard of it !!

Just a quick thought - mine is a UK issued Driving License which is recognised by the US, is yours the same ?

I've just got this from Avis about hiring cars in the US - seems pretty clear to me.962.gif. Especially the first paragraph.
    and from Hertz.com
A valid driver's licence, issued from your country of residence and held for at least one year, MUST be presented at time of rental. If your licence is not in English, an International Driver's Permit may be required. The minimum rental age is 25 years old on most rentals. Hertz honours the Hertz Charge Card and most major credit/charge cards.

Yup I have a full UK license too.

I think I may have got emigration confused with vacational car hire. Indeed you are correct, I hired a car in Cuba last summer and did not need an IDP. I think an IDP is required for immigrants, or those using private cars or company cars.

I have to have an IDP for work and private use in Canada.

I think I got my wires crossed there hehe. :)

Either way we've both learnt something lol.
