When are fees payable?

Options
Can someone tell us what bills we need to pay at the start of term? Do we pay tuition fees for the whole year or just the term and when do we get the bill? Do they send the bills to home addressess or just give them to the student?

Also accomadation fees for halls, I know you can pay per term, is this normal or do you have to ask for this and when is this payable?

Anything else we dont even know about yet, any other bills?

My daughter has not applied for her student loan yet, could not get through on the phone earlier this week so we are trying to sort some money out to pay bills but we dont know the details yet

My daughter is hoping to be in halls at York St Johns if that is of any relevence

i'm not if it goes for everyone but i had a choice to pay the fee's in one go or 6 monthly installments from november to april.
the bills came to me at my home address, so i'd assume they would go to your daughter too.
i paid the first 2 months then cleared it all with my second loan installment jsut after xmas.

as for the student loan, you can apply via post or over the internet.

i wouldnt worry about applying late, i started uni last year and didnt apply for the loan until about now and i had my loan paid mid october, only 2-3 weeks later than i started.

i'm not sure on the halls as i stayed at home.

    It depends on the uni.

At manchester we have the option of paying fees by direct debit in termly installments or upfront at the start of the year - there is a small discount for that but usually high interest saving beats that so unless you just want to get the fees out the way it's probably best to go for the 3 termly installments. However make sure your daughter is aware of when they are and don't let her spend the money that should be going on fees. You have to have either paid up front or have the direct debit set up before your daughter goes to registration - Our uni has a payment hotline you call up to do this.

For halls we had to pay a deposit before we arrived and our residential union fees.. Then I paid monthly.. :)

We were never really given paper bills as such - for halls we sent back the direct debit form - which was sent to my home address.. for fees we just called the hotline - the reciepts for the payment went to my term time address and my home address.

Lellie is right - is depends on the Uni (weird - I'm just starting a masters at Manchester!). This year, some unis are introducing a system where you can pay online, but if you've got any queries I'd recommend ringing the admissions office (the number will be on the website). I remember starting my undergraduate degree and EVERYBODY was panicking about money, so you're not alone, and the staff are 100% used to the confusion! About accommodation, I paid my hall/catering fees at the start of each term (at Chester Uni), which -luckily- coincided with the arrival of my much-needed student loan installment! I think most unis tend to do it that way (as do private landlords who cater for students). A couple of other points - sthe tudent loans people are good, but you'll get a lot of paperwork through so keep everything in good order. I can't remember how many times I had to be sent a new password because I couldn't find mine! Also, the one piece of advice I'd give to any new undergraduate is, if at all possible (and especially if you're not sure of what job you want to get into, or you're thinking of doing postgraduate study) save some of your student loan as a back-up for after graduation. As a very, very poor postgraduate I wish that I had saved a bit of my loan rather than frittering it away! It's still really important to have fun at uni, and there's no need to be miserly, but still... looking back I spent way too much on eating out, lol! I wouldn't mind, but I enjoy cooking, lol... :rotfl:

Don't forget that if your daughter is starting her university course this year as well as the student maintenance loan she can get a loan from the Student Loans Company to pay for her fees as well.

I've got to have a proper read of all the bits of paper yet but I dont think my daughter will get any maintenance grant because they will assess her parents as being fabulously rich:rotfl:

We have alos had a complication with her accomadation, sorted for the time being.

Paperwork I am dreading, I can barely keep up as it is

Regardless of parents income she should be entitled to a loan for her tuition fees and also a maintenance loan. I believe all new students are entitled to receive the same 'loan' amount towards accomodation / living costs but the parental income determines how much of that is a grant (which doesn't need to be paid back).
