A lot of the disposable income but cash-in-hand work, i would have thought.
Cleaner, man and van, gardener, dry cleaning courier, flyer delivery guy, smalltime dope dealer, fence... all cash jobs.0

I am afraid I find the phrase "taken from others", quite offensive as it makes it sounds as if a person is stealing. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0

I agree Sue. People seem to continue to think it is still their money. It isn't, it is the public purse. Moggylover & I highlighted how this is the dichotomy - you have to trust the person claiming the benefit to spend it appropriately.
Taxpayers do not have the automatic right to say where every penny of all taxes goes. It is the PUBLIC purse, & therefore the money gets paid out in societies interests. Not in the way desired by a select number of taxpayers. The greater good has to be met, therefore some people will see money spent on stuff they don't like.
Don't like it, go live as a hermit on an island & have no social contact with other people...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0

Sorry, no offence meant. But I do not know many who pay their taxes without some measure of compulsion. Can be a bit galling when you see it being pi**ed away while someone says they cannot afford to give their kids decent food.0

personally i find it more galling when it's used to send young men and women to be blown up by roadside bombs in a country we have no right to be in.Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0

I like the island idea too.
But as to the first part of the quote: isn't that a part of a decision we can say how we feel about when we vote? We have the right to vote for policies, including spend priorities, when we vote, and we have te right to voice our disagreement or support. However distastful I find some people's expression I'm glad I live somewhere where we are still allowed to disagree with the majority and not risk my life in doing so.0

If taxpayers don't have a right to influence where their money is spent, who does? Who determines 'society's interest' or the 'greater good'? Tony Blair argued that it was the greater good to attack Iraq....
The government could raise taxes to much higher than they are now to expand the welfare state to cover more people and reduce income inequality even further - is that what we should be doing because it would be in the greater good?0
