Is it too late to plant potatoes?
Hiya,
I've now cleared enough space on my new allotment to get planting something, so need to get filling it up!
I was thinking potatoes would be good, and I think I saw some seed potatoes on sale in Homebase last week. Is it still OK to plant these, or is it too late? And if I buy the ones from Homebase, do they need 'chitting' or do they come ready-to-sow?
As you can probably tell, I've never grown potatoes before!
Oh, and am I better off going to a proper garden centre for things like seed potatoes and compost, rather than Homebase?
Thanks
Pete

Yes, Pete - go ahead and put some potatoes in.
I never chit potatoes - just put the seed potato into the soil.
Welcome to grow-your-own gardening - I hope you enjoy it.

Morning Pete,
Yeah, get the potatoes in and you will still get a crop. I only got some of mine in the soil this week. Some folks don't bother chitting maincrop anyway so I wouldn't wait.
We don't have a Homebase here to compare it to so I can't help there but I've found B&Q multi-purpose potting compost 3 for £10 (70L) is good value, sieved for seeds and as it is for containers.
Good luck with your allotment. No longer half of Optimisticpair
