Rubbish PC - What rights do I have

In july 2009 I bought a PC from PC world.
It's been nothing but trouble.
Every time it reboots I need to put the recovery disk in becasue it says "Boot failure- can't find hard drive"

I've put up with it so far but enough is enough.
I haven't contacted them at all about this so far.
Am I within my rights to go back and ask for a full refund since it is less than 1 year since I bought it or is it more complicated than that?

Yes return it to shop, I would expect them to do a repair first. Not sure if you can request a refund or as new replacement? Basically the problem sounds hard drive or motherboard related, if its the hard drive the fix will be easy (just replacing the current hard-drive and moving your stuff over) for them and cure your problems. If its a motherboard they may well replace the unit for you anyway as it may not be possible to get the same motherboard now. It should still be under warranty with them anyway. All electrical items get at least a 1year warranty as far as I am aware?

Hard drives generally come with a 5year manufactures warranty also if it was to break past the warranty with PC world.

You dont need the box just proof of purchase

Sounds like its not fit for purpose, I am guessing either OS is corrupted or more likely HD is

My son purchashed a pc from them and all they would do was repair it and it was still under warranty under ther 12mths which took several weeks each time it was at the shop more than at home each time they put in a new part they just extended the warranty this happened about 4 times at the moment its ok.You will have to be firm to get a new one or a refund good luck.

I think after they have attempted repair a couple of times you can request a new one? not sure how to go about this as don't deal with these companies. But there are obviously serious problems if it has to keep returning to the shop so often and as mentioned it is not 'fit for use'. They may just be trying to buy time for the warranty to run out to sell you something else.

i'm surprised it hasn't been said yet but.........

what did you expect buying from pc world?

    are they experts? no

most of the staff, not all, are inept and have very little knowledge of pc's or the right eqpt that you will need. it's a shop, they are there to sell
You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.

I've got an idea that you can insist on a replacement rather than repair if within a certain timescale. But once you've agree to repair you can't then insist item is replaced, so do some research first regarding your rights to replacement.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

If you have any emails, photos or other stuff you want to keep, copy to a CD/DVD before you take it back, because there's a good chance they may wipe/change hard drive.
