Cleaning Charges - Daylight Robbery?

My two housemates and I left our Reading property let by Romans in early April. All of us had rented there for less than 2 years. The house has been rented out for more than 10 years with only the most basic inspections from the agency.

Finally, they have prepared the bill. We are being charged £408.43 for 'full professional cleaning' and furniture removal. The dirt has been caused and the furniture left by previous housemates over the past DECADE!

How can they possibly have a legal basis for this - charging us for clearing up other people's mess?

And I'll bet every one of them has been charged for "full professional cleaning" and furniture removal. Very old trick. Ask for a copy of the invoice from the cleaning company and whoever they got to remove the furniture.

Ask also for them to demonstrate how much more dirty the property was when you moved out compared to when you moved in. If they have photos of 'before' and 'after' confirming the need for full cleaning then not much you can do - you should have cleaned better! If not, well they are on shaky ground.
