Information regarding building a website

Where can I get information about building a website?

Free templates and the like.

Have tried asking for help on here... and have had a few responses... but if you want somethings done it's quite obvious that you'll have to do it yourself.

Maybe I should have posted in the freebies forum!

Thanks to those who actually offered to help!

that's a bit harsh, building and maintaing a website takes a fair amount of effort esp the kind of stuff you are asking for forums and ecomms.

most people that offer help on here to sort peoples problems out will already have a day job and probably already looking after other web sites etc.

give it a go yourself, spend your money on buying a book and post if you have questions about how to achieve things not just 'build me a website please'.

Think someone suggested front page in one of the others threads you started on that, have a look you can probably get a trial and that has templates in.

I know this has been posted countless times before, but it really depends on what you want.
If you just want a basic site to show nice pics of your dogs in the back garden, then yes, the free templates (there are tens of thousands on the first page of a google search for free html templates) will suit you just fine.
If you want a more interactive site, then you need to start with the basics, and work your way up. You'll need to learn html for a start (http://www.w3schools.com/html/).
From there you will need to look at what applications you want to run, and how you want them to operate. Based on this, you will need to look at other programming languages and techniques. The simple reason for this is that if you don't know how something works, how can you fix a problem?
There are loads of sites offering all sorts of applications, like forums, shopping carts, visitor books which will be available FOC. These can be downloaded and tweaked as Aly says, but unless you know the basics of the languages involved, then you'll be struggling to implement those changes you want.
If this is a commerce site, and needs a lot of functionality, then it may be more cost effective to employ a designer to make the site for you. Should you have any problems, you can then go back to them to have these issues resolved.

The old adage applies.........you get what you pays for.

If you want a free managable site, have a look at PHPNuke, DotNetNuke and CommunityServer (google them).

They're all free community or portal applications. You'd just need to tailor it, or get someone to tailor it for you, so that it suites your needs.

I guess if you don't ask you don't get, but you need to give some incentive. You'd have to find someone incredibly generous to go out of their way to set such a site up for free. Me personally, I'm very busy at work, and any spare time I do get I use socially, or to work on my own site/skills. You'll probably find quite a lot of people are in a similar situation.

I also think that's a bit harsh and sarcastic! Some people just want something for nothing and get narked when others don't want to give up their valuable time for someone they don't know and will never meet and expects people to fall over themselves to work for peanuts.

As far as I'm aware, you haven't stated the exact purpose of your web site. I imagine it's for business? If it is, then I think it's only fair that you pay the going rate for having a site built and designed by someone. If I called out a plumber, decorator, mechanic etc, I wouldn't expect them to work for next to nothing just because I was too stingy to pay the going rate. Sorry if that sounds harsh but it's true.

There's been some really useful advice offered so far, but if learning code and new software seems too daunting for you, and if you need to get something up and running reasonably quick, then you might find it useful going to some of the domain name providers that supply hosting services - they usually offer web packages so that you can get a site up and running in no time.

One of those that springs to mind is Easily and they offer a web starter package http://http://easily.co.uk/index.php3?exe=webstyler. You will need to transfer your domain name over to them to build/host your site. Plus they offer e-mail hosting at an extra cost.

Basically you got it spot on in your post! Only you know exactly what you want and if someone else created something for you, the chances are that you would be unable to make the necessary changes/additions/updates for yourself, so you would be better off doing it for yourself from the outset.

Once you have something up and running, you could ask specific questions about how to do this that and the other but create the basic site for yourself and expand on it as you learn more.

    ;)

  • I saw another thread about this and I recommended Googlepages.

I use this for my squash club website and it is great. Nothing fancy but it does the job.

What do you want yours for?
