Whereas most bands are playing to make a few bob; they aren't likely to be rolling in it for some considerable time.

But if they do make it big then photos of them before they were famous will be worth the most.

    Hey,

I'm not a photographer myself, but i am a designer and illustrator.. so i guess it's a creative background!

Best thing to do is get yourself out there, photographing your mates band for free is a good start to build up your folio. No-one will pay you unless you have experience :) You might find you have to do a few freebies... it's a pain but worth it in the long run... plus you may get some drinks or a free gig if you follow the music area. I wouldn't bother with stock photography, you get mere pennies for your hard effort and have no say in what context it's used or anything.

Set up a blog, could double as a gig review and showcasing your amazing work (or if you have a mate who good at reviewing let them write it). My friend is a photographer and digital artist, she set up a competition once she got a little better known, she asked local bands to email her their stuff and the best one won a free album cover and some gig photos, she got lots of interest (and lots of free music!)

Look at other areas of photography too not just gigs/album covers etc... i've heard weddings are a bit mad... but maybe low key weddings would be fine! let the pro's who charge a fortune deal with the messy hectic wedding with brides screaming that nothings right!

Get on Twitter, make friends with local unknown bands, or bands due to come and play in your local area and let them now what you do :)

It can take a while, but if you enjoy photography anyway it'll be a hoot!
