How often to service boiler..?

Basically we have a combi boiler and did not get it serviced last year.
Thinking about it now-how often is it neccessary to have the boiler fully serviced?

Can I ask who do you get to service you boiler ?

I have a Vaillant boiler its about 4 years old now and has never been serviced but there doesnt seem to be any problem with it. I have thought about getting it serviced but didnt know where to go to ensure the person who did it was familier with the boiler and would do a good job

The manufacturers state that the boiler should be serviced yearly. What's confusing is that a typical "service" by British Gas etc, usually involves merely doing an emissions check and a visual inspection of it running properly.

In my book, a service is what you get when you take your car in where you'll have some filters and parts changed and a lubrication. I don't know why at least something like putting additives into the central heating system isn't included in a service. It would most likely cut down on call-outs.

British Gas have told me that they don't like to take boilers apart to service them as it can cause more harm then good. Which basically means they don't know how to put them back together properly.

if it is working ok, and you check it visually to make sure it looks ok then the only reason i could see for a "service" would be to sheck for carbon monoxide leaks, you can buy cheap sticky detectors for carbon monoxide, i keep one with my boiler and gas fire

I've been told by more than one person in the trade that routine annual servicing of a boiler amounts to nothing more than a visual inspection and maybe removal of dust.

I've had my boiler serviced once in 5 years. I've had no problems with it. That's no guarantee you'll be as lucky though. :) I regularly check my system pressure, bleed radiators, etc and last year I fitted a larger radiator in my bathroom. So I took the opportunity to drain the system and renew the water with fresh additives.

I suppose a sensible thing to do would be to put what you would use for a service into a piggy-bank for any possible, future problems.

We moved house and got the 2+ year old boiler checked; turned out it was operating on the safety valve. Whenever the central heating was on the pressure increased until the safety valve cut in to release pressure. We would never have known if we hadn't called someone in for an unrelated problem.
