Never knowingly undersold

Even if you found a store within 8 miles that was selling cheaper, they cant be expected to visit every competitor every day and check the prices of thousands of items......therefore if it IS being sold cheaper, they wouldnt know about it - hence "never KNOWINGLY undersold".
It's not just the 'knowingly' part - yeas I agree that they may not know that shop X has it at price Y *but* when you ask them to price match they will try anything to wriggle out of it and even if they do match the price - is that reflected in their store on their prices when they full well know they're not the best price.0 -

I'm not saying its moral. But from a business point of view i can understand it. I mean you cant expect a store that pays premium rent prices for a city centre store, not to mention staff costs etc to offer the same price as a online retailer or a store that doesnt have a premium location and therefore has less overheads.
TBH i would rather pay a extra few quid if i know i'm keeping someone in a job. This may sound completely ignorant but i believe part of the reason we're in a recession now is because so many jobs are being outsourced outwith the UK so companies can lower their prices for the consumer. I'd rather have people in jobs as it means they have more disposable income and therefore, they provide stability to my job.You keep using that word. I can't help wondering why the people here are defending so vigorously a company with a misleading advert.
You do know that 'Never knowingly undersold' is only half of the slogan?
The full slogan is 'Never knowingly undersold, on quality, price and service'.:money:
So if it's not the same 'service' the shop you chose to purchase your camcorder provides, it's not the same deal?
I used to work for the John Lewis partnership, the amount of times i refunded a bottle of wine with not even a glass left in it; 'because it was off'.
That's service:p with a smile I might add;)War does not determine who is right - only who is left.0 -

All adverts are "misleading" to a degree. Lynx will not make you more attractive to hot women (although a paper bag might). Eating dairylea dunkers will not make you more popular (not unless you can do it while riding a skateboard on your head, juggling 3 chimps and being 7 years old).
Is it really JL's fault some people dont understand the concept of "Terms & Conditions apply"?
I mean it says on their advert that they apply so how on earth is their advert misleading? Its basically telling you there are strings attached. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
Just read this thread with interest ... I have never shopped at JL before but I think I will buy my new flash tv from there. Low prices are good, but service is key too. A price match facility is excellent but one has to be naive to think that everything will always price-match. JL is a business. Just like Comet, Currys and your local electrical shop.
5 year guarantee with JL sounds good too. Not sure why a panasonic guarantee will be better then JL? The OP harps on about the panasonic guarantee being better? Let's put it this way, I know where the nearest JL is but no idea where the nearest Panasonic service centre is ...
And as one poster said, the JL FULL slogan should be used ... personally I always thought JL was far too expensive for the likes of me (and I am on an above average wage) but i am obviously wrong

I can see that writing on these forum pages has become your hobby but you have not read this topic fully. You may believe that paying 20% more on an £800 item is worth it to get a 5 year guarantee over perhaps a 3 year guarantee. But would you consider it worthwhile if JL only offered a 2 year guarantee if you could buy the item nearer home with a 5 year guarantee and 20% less than JL? John Lewis is not the store it was - don't have the blind faith that I once did.0 -
It took 5 days to finally persuade them to a match a price but then they wouldn't include the free extras that the other shop was offering.
I don't know why I didn't notice this when I replied earlier, but it's a key point:
They did match the camera. They were aware that the camera was cheaper and matched it.
If the case and other extras could be bought individually, each cheaper, then they would be matched too.
When it becomes part of a deal, it's not the same at all. What were the extras (aside from the guarantee) that cost an extra £143 at jl?
I can think of perhaps a case, or a lens or SD card. But then it would have to be a VERY cheap lens, assuming it was even an SLR you were buying.0 -

It's not relevant to the issue but just to humour you - as I said initially I quoted the shop, the price, the camera plus the extras to John Lewis (the other shop and JL both offered 2 year guarantee). JL took 5 days to tell me that they would match the price but not the extras - 5 days even though I had informed them about the extras at the start! - call it service? With the extras the price difference was about £200 and JL said I would be better buying it from the other shop. BUT wanting a good service I threw both deals to the wind and purchased the camera local to me with a 5 year guarantee and got it for £143.00 less than the JL asking price. JL has knowingly continued to sell this camera at their high price since I drew the issue to their attention. John Lewis needs to change their slogan0 -
I find it amusing you are accusing us all of missing the point when you fail to "get the point" yourself.
JL make it clear there are T&C's surrounding their slogan/advert. Part of those T&C's is that its on a like for like basis.
A camera with SD card and case etc vs a camera is NOT the same offer and therefore not covered by their pricematch policy.
It may not be ideal but its part of the world we live in. If you wish to buy anythingat all - even a 10p mix up (those were the days eh?) then you are technically entering into a contract of which there are terms and conditions present.
Considering consumer rights thread is technically all about T&C's of contracts and rights..............you've chosen the wrong place to post if you wanted sympathy imo.You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
