British Gas - Do they owe me money?

I have had a pre payment meter for both gas and electric since 18th December 2009. I owed them money on both and could not afford to pay all in one go at the time.
The electricity debt at December 3rd 2009 was £157.98, when the meter was installed they sent me a letter saying the debt was £285.00
The gas debt was £183.81 at 19th November 2009, when the meter was installed they sent me a letter saying the debt was £330.70.
I emailed them at the time and received no response but failed to take the matter up.
Anyway, on 15th May 2010 I enquired about the balance on both accounts and was sent an email from british gas telling me that my electric account was in debit by £65.25 and my gas account was in credit by £164.30.
I emailed them asking for a refund on the gas account and had a phone call today telling me that they dont owe me a penny and I owe them over £160. My meter has always said that I owe £185 since the day it was installed, it never changed untill today and the money has been taken off us every wednesday! My partner is currently on the phone to a woman at british gas that he can hardly understand, trying to ask her if she can explain 1) why i was sent the email if its not right and 2) exactly how much we owe on each account. This is very very hard work.
Does anyone have any experience of british gas changing their mind about balances on pre payment accounts?
Thanks.
