Windows Movie Maker

Hi there, im hoping someone might be able to help me out.
Im trying to import movie files into Windows Movie maker in order to fit them all together to make some movies.
The trouble is i keep getting this error message every time i try to import any file.
The file F:\MP_ROOT\101PNV01\M2U00185.MPG cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.
All the files are mpg files and i have tried importing direct from my Sony Handicam and also direct from the files on my computer where i have previously transferred them.
Any help will be gratefully received.
