Paying cheques into Natwest.

I have just opened a Step account with Natwest.
I have 2 cheques dated from begining April and a pal told me that cheques only last 2-3 months before they become invalid,i am not sure.
I want to pay these into my account but i am unable to get to the bank during opening hours. Looking through some paperwork from Natwest it says you can pay cheques into an ATM and my nearest one only has a machine on the outside so how will the machine know its from me.
I have not got a card or pin yet so can somebody tell me how i can pay the cheques as i havent got a paying in slip or envelopes so i could post them off.
Any help gratefully taken.

Cheques last for 6 months from date of issue.I have not got a card or pin yet so can somebody tell me how i can pay the cheques as i havent got a paying in slip or envelopes so i could post them off.
Paying in slips may be in your chequebook. If you cannot get into a branch, I would send the cheque with a letter containing your signature into the branch asking to pay it in, with your account details. If you can find a paying in slip, I would post it in with the cheque.Best Regards

To pay cheques in at an ATM you need a card and PIN. when the card is inserted one of the options is to deposit cheques, the machine offers an envlops for the cheque to be inserted. When you deposit that envelope the ATM overprints the envelope which identifies the transaction and account details.
NB If I recall correctly, some cheques are endorsed with a limited validity (3 months or so). If it doesn't state a validity they will be valid for the usual 6 month period as the previous respondent said.0 -

I pay all my cheques into my Smile account by posting them to a Freepost address along with a slip from my paying in book. I also do the same with my Lloyds account although I have to put a stamp on those.0

Hey there,
If you do put cheques into the bank by post, be sure to mark the envelope clearly "please open at branch". Otherwise it will be forwarded to a service centre (Bolton, Leicester, Manchester) and opened there before being paid in. This can add a day to the cheque clearing.
It's also worth giving the branch a quick call to make sure they've received it. This is trickier at natwest since talking direct to branch is now very difficult.Union official.

Anything I post is solely MY OPINION. It never constitutes legal, financial or collective bargaining advice. I may tell you based on information given how I might approach an employment dispute case, but you should always seek advice from your own Union representative. If you don't have one, get one!0
