Does anyone know how to remove tree stumps easily?

I cut down approx 20 trees last summer and now have loads of dangerous stumps throughout my garden, they range in size from a couple of incews in diameter to the biggests which is about 24 inches in diameter.

I have had a quote of £250 for a stump grinder and opperator for the day, but was hopping to do it myself over a few weekend for less?

I had ago on monday night and nearly put my back out. I have loads of tools, cahian saw, forks spades axes etc!

I think i will need to posin the roots then try and remove them a few months later, so can anyone recomend a cheap and easy poisin, bear in mind i will need enough for about 20 stumps or so.

Has anyone got a homemade recipie for a poisin?

I drilled lots of holes in my tree stump and cut into the middle of it with a chainsaw, right down to the ground level, before covering it with weed suppressant (to allow rain in). It took 18 months for the whole thing to get mushy enough for it to come away in my hands bit by bit.

I'd been advised against pouring paint, rock salt, caustic soda, bleach, and the other noxious things that you hear about, into the drill holes because these things seep into the ground and contaminate the garden.

I've heard that neat Roundup can be put into the drill holes, but I don't know how effective it is.

The quickest way to get rid of a tree stump is to leave at least 3 feet of the trunk above ground, wrap a towing rope around it and get a substantial car or truck to pull it out of the ground.

For that many stumps £250 for grinder and operator is a good deal I'd say

if you hammer copper nails into the stumps and leave alone for a while that will kill the roots. :j

I'd say £250 was a fair price to avoid bad back.

The beauty of the stump grinder is the result really is 'instant', and you can replant and use the ground right away.

We paid £500 7 years ago to have 6 trees and roots taken up. They missed one and we cut that down ourselves, the stump is still there 5 years later. £250 sounds a good price to me. You ground will be excelent for planting afterwoods, loads of goodness from the trees.
