I suspect that companies like swiftcover do not make life easy for this reason.

You, David, are a splendid example of what so many insurers rely on for business. In this case, don't make the auto-renew feature very prominent in the renewal bumpf, then sit back and wait for the inertia renewals to clock up. At the very least they will get a nice little cancellation fee they don't deserve - at the most, they will retain a piece of business they might have lost to a competitor.
Let's make an even plainer statement: I have no doubt that a number of insurers build little semi-scams like this into their business plans and actually reward staff for coming up with similar ideas that will result in greater retained income.42 years of experience in the insurance industry.
And nothing the industry tries do to us surprises me any more!0
