BA Hons top up in Learning and Teaching

Options
Hello all!

I am due to finish my FD in Early Years in July, and am now embarking on applying for the above course. I had originally decided to stop here and not complete a 3rd year, but now it seems I should do it and I'm totally scared.

This year has been really difficult for me, with childcare issues, financial issues and health worries within the family. My grades have reflected this and I just don't know how I'll get along in year 3.

I don't currently work, the above course is over 1 day per week, so you might say I have all the time in the world to do it but I'm finding running a home, looking after my two girls and hubby to be is rather like juggling too many balls.

I know I'll worry about this and walk into it blindly and hopefully pass but I just need someone to tell me it will be okay!!!!!! :o

It will be okay if you have the determination to do it. I have just today completed my BA (hons) in Ed studies specialising in early childhood and I have 2 young children, a home to keep and a husband to look after as well as studying. Last year my dh found out he had a tumour (non-malignant (sp)) on his brain so we had the stress of that, thankfully it was removed by surgery and has not grown back. What I am trying to get at is well all have stress at home but you need to want to do it. IMO the third year as been the easiest year so far as I knew what to expect and what was expected of me.

Thank you for sharing your experience. How did you find the dissertation? I feel I blag every grade I get, the assignments I submit seem such crap to me, but they still pass, and I've heard the dissertations are 10,000 words. I cannot imagine doing something so huge. Are you given days off uni to get this done?

Dissertations are usually 12-15000 words. Thankfully we did not have a dissertation as such it was a research project worth only 20 credits however we had other work and a placement on top. I could have easily written 12000 words and found it difficult to stick to the 6000 words as I could not get my teeth into it. I had to delete 2000 words and was still well over  You just need to organise your time and leave the ironing etc (you should see my ironing basket I have no excuse anymore). It is only a year and if you're passing your assessments then it is down to your hard work and you shoudn't dismiss your efforts. I did get time off to do my research.

My home is already a tip, I have two years worth of clutter built up, we only live in a 2bed for 4 people and it's a state!!! I longed for the days of doing housework while the girls were at school and pre-school and curling up to the soaps that I haven't watched in years, but as my OH said, I'd only slip into depression and overeat again if I did that!

I guess I'll apply and speak to the tutor if I'm called in for an interview. Thank you very much! x

You will be allocated a dissertation/project supervisor, no doubt, so make sure that you have regularl tutorials with him/her and take hime/her drafts of sections/chapters for feedback. You will also get a dissertation brief/guidance handout/booklet which will no doubt tell you about the layout expected etc. Why not form a little support group with a few other learners to support each other through the dissertation?
