Wow, freyasmum, that's some cake - please can I have the recipe for your fabulous-loooking shiny icing ? Does it taste as good as it looks ? I'm off to make one now, but would like to make it look just like yours, icing and all. This is NOT a way to save money (or lose weight) but it's very cheering all the same:j Thank you !!0

Hiya Morgan
I just used the basic cake recipe and baked it in an 8 (i think, may have been 7) inch cake tin.
When cooled, I halved it and put the same icing inside as was on the outside. The I got a bar of white chocolate (I just used tesco/asda own brand) and a knife and started making curls. I just lay the chocolate flat on the worktop and put the knife at an angle and kinda scraped it. It was the first time I had done it (well, the first time I had baked a cake like that and iced it, too! normally loaf tins I use) and it took a wee bit of getting used to - as you can see, it looks as though I have grated some of it
I think from the top of my head, the icing recipe is...
100g plain chocolate (again, used asda/tesco own)
50g butter
1 egg
6 oz () icing sugar, sifted
I'll go downstairs and check in a minute then report back:D
What you do is melt the chocolate and butter in a bain marie and once that's done you add the egg and beat in quickly. The you add the icing sugar a bit at a time. I forgot to sift it the first time and so just used the hand blender and it came out lovely so I did that again this time:D

p.s. I trebled the quantities... I have way too much now and will have to make some fairy cakesto use it up... [sarcasm] oh dear [/sarcasm]
Edit: Yes, it does taste nice0 -
Freyasmum, that cake looks gorgeous.Hope it tasted as good as it looks?
My cake wasn`t so nice.I did over cook it slightly so it was a bit dry and not very chocolatey, probably cos I didn`t use proper cocoa.Sadly is hasn`t got any better as the days have passed and the kids have even left it alone.Oh well more for me I guess!Debt Free Date:10/09/2007 :j :money:0 -

Very nice cake, very moist, interesting texture....but not really very chocolatey tasting. Or is that just me?
When I scraped the bowl clean of mixture, that tasted very chocolatey. But the finished cake didn't really. Not even on day five.
Did anyone else find that?
I have to admit, I chucked a bit of extra cocoa powder in the cakes I made after the first one, as I thought it could use a bit more. I have no idea if this improved it though, as I only ate the first one. I've given the rest away.
It might all be down to the quality of the cocoa. I know I bought the cheapest. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

My dad was staying away that night and when he came home he asked my mum what the occasion was, what with the cake and all, and when she said that I just made it, he seemed surprised (not sure if I should take this as a compliment, the more I hear it!) - he thought it had been bought! :T

And, no, I'm not!
:rotfl:
Just an aside, I used cadbury's cocoa powder and it could probably still have done with a bit more chocolate!0 -
