Help, earned more than we thought!

Hiya could someone please help us to find out roughly how much we have been overpaid.

We informed the Tax Credits Office that OH would earn approx £14,500 this coming year and asked that our award is based on the coming year rather than the previous year (as the year before he earned approx £35,000). ANyway he has had so much overtime this year and his contract states that he must work the overtime and he has in fact been paid £21,478.56 (P60 details).

Does anyone know approximately how much we will have to pay back? Please help because I'm really worried now.

Not sure if it's of any relevance but we are a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 children (one child has autism so is disabled).

We are grateful for any help received,

Thank you

Try this calculator http://www.turn2us.org.uk/benefits_search.aspx for both figures and it will tell you the difference, should give you some idea.

How do you get them to base it on current year? I thought they went on last year's income? We had major drop in income over 09/10 but did not get any extra tax credits as they were basing it on 08/09, which was a good year. I told them about our drops in income along the way but made no difference. Still got my £41 a month, despite having 3 children too. Only now in 10/11 are we starting to get a bit more.

Is this right that you can get them to disregard a previous good year and work on the current crap one?

in normal circumstances your award will be based on previous yrs income however if the current yr is going to be lower and you inform them of that then they should always use the current yrs income to calculate your claim.

    Hello

thanks for that. so are you saying I have missed out as could have been getting extra money last year too? Can I get that back? I told them at the time but the person I spoke to said we were still on high income. :rotfl:After nearly peeiing my pants laughing, I explained that income of £20k something was nothing when you have mortgage to pay and 3 children to provide for.

    cheers

Someone please correct me if I am wrong but if you have estimated an income of £14.5K you will have qualified for WTC as well as CTCs. As the cut off for WTCs is £16k something you have been paid for them and not entitled to it.

I assumed you dont work? so rough calculations 2 children on the estimated income for 09/10 you would have been getting £160 roughly a week?
on the actual income rough calculations you should have been getting £106 a week a rough over payment of £2.5 k plus any over payments from 6th april 10 to when you submit your renewal now

If I were you I would get your renewal done over the phone as soon as so you know where you stand with this years award and they will deduct the over payment from this years award but I do think they will only take a certain % off each week/4 weekly payment

Like I said if I am wrong someone please correct me

    Hope this helps Op

I have heard that you lose 39p in the £1 where you go over. So that would roughly be an overpayment of 2730. Of course each claim is unique so it may not be that simple. Im sure they would spread it over the year anyway. They have done with me although my income hasnt junped as much in a year.

When you do your annual declaration for 09/10 if your actual income in that year was less than what your award was based on all year then you will probably be owed money. That won't be calculated until you do that annual declaration.
