Me too, I'm sticking with Halifax personally but I have my main accounts within their network and their CC so it's the best choice in both ways.

I'd say, if you're asking then there's probably a reason you aren't sure yet.

There's not really any rushes. It can be done any time within about a month for most people. Make appointments at say the top three banks for Aug 20th ish and then go with the best one on the day.

Only that I don't want to open an account tomorrow only to find out in 3 weeks time they are suddenly offering ipods too :D (they did last year)

When I said rush, I didn't mean being able to get to the bank, just the increased number of DD and SO transfers banks must have to do at this time of year - I know these sometimes go wrong and figure there is more chance of mistakes when there are more to do, just don't want to end up blacklisted by 3.

Well from what I've read from another thread on this board, they only seem to grant you your student account from year to year so the nearer to the time your loan goes in you open it, the less chance of you losing the student account for a month each year mid Aug - mid Sep which could be really costly.

That is useful to know, I didn't realise I would have to prove my student status every year!

lrosie - i am fascinated to read this - I never understand why some students are turned down and others aren't. As an experiment I would like to follow this threough with HBOS - and see if we can get you your account.

Please PM me if you're interested

Just to bring it to your attention that this credit scoring with HBOS is a real problem. There are many posts in this forum about people being rejected from the account as have I and 3 of my friends I have recommended the account to. This makes no sense and other banks like Natwest have offered me their accounts without hesitation. It's no good offering an account if they're not going to give it to any of their customers!
  • I don't know how many other students managed to get such a poor credit rating as I did before I went for a student account -- but I was rejected by just about every bank there was...apart from Barclays.

For some reason they just set it up, gave me a default £200 overdraft (plus loads of other free things like National Express card and loads of nice deals) and then even gave me a Barclaycard if I wanted it .. presumably all without a credit check, because everywhere else declined me on that basis.

If you are having problems with your credit rating and want a student account, I suggest getting yourself down Barclays.

Can anyone offer some advice, please
I am due to start Uni in September, as a mature student, with a bad credit rating, what are my chances of getting a new student bank account, and who should i apply to?
