  • Keth, that cake looks beautiful - well done :T :A

For the record, I don't feed my cake any more. I weigh out the fruit, nuts, peel, juice, treacle in October and soak that in brandy. I stir every few days and add more brandy as necessary (and try to resist tasting it :o:p ). I then make the cake in mid December. That way it's moist, and I don't have the faff of feeding it. It's very moist btw, and keeps well.

Decided I'm going to make my first Christmas cake this year

Is it too early to start this weekend and does anyone have a very tasty but fairly simple receipe as I'm a CC virgin?? :o

What do I keep it in for 5 months while getting it drunk on brandy? I don't have an airtight container big enough though I have a roses tin  any good?

Does seem a bit early. I do mine October half term. I usually end up using Delia's recipe - will look for a link for you - and yes, big Roses tin is ideal.

Talk about getting a head start. I actually make mine a week before Christmas because the recipe I have is quite moist. I don't have it on my computer, but if I get the time in the next couple of days I'll type it up and post it on here. It is very simple.

Okay, either you are extremely organised or you must just love Christmas. The summer isn't even over. It is too early to be talking about Christmas presents. Unless, of course, its mine.:rotfl:

    Hi Skint_Catt,

I normally wrap the cake in greaseproof paper and then tin foil but a roses tin will be fine.

    These earlier threads may help:

quick question ...when is the right time to bake a Christmas cake?

I had this big plan after last Christmas that this year I'd be all prepared.... get the cake, jams, chutneys, puddings all made in August, then there'd be no rush.

Instead I've bulged a disc and can't even cook dinner let alone anything else. The best laid plans and all that.....

I made mine around August 20th last year, wrapped it in tinfoil and plied it with brandy until Christmas and it stayed lovely and moist. We didn't finish eating them (made 2) until March/April and they were still fine then! I was just thinking today that I'll need to make them soon so I don't see why you shouldn't! I can post the recipe I use tomorrow if you like?
