Garden patch help

Hi I have just pulled my shed down and it's left me a nice little spot to have a veggie plot :jHowever I am totally baffled with what to grow! I can just about manage toms and cucumber's in pots but that's all I've ever done. Any suggestion as to what I can put in would be very much appreciated. Do I plant seed's straight in the soil or do I grow in pots and then transplant them? I have seen veggie's in little pots already growing and the garden centre's but I wanted to do what I can as cheap as possible.

Without meaning to be unkind, your question is a little bit like saying, I have emptied my wardrobe and can you tell me what to buy?

In your shoes, I would go to somewhere like wilkinsons and look at the seeds section. Pick up a few packets of what you fancy trying and read what the instructions suggest on the back. You will be looking for things like when to sew in pots and when to transfer out, or whether you can directly sew into the ground - some things you can.

Salads and French/Runner Beans would be a good place to start, but there really is quite a lot of choice.

If you want to grow things this year then on the whole you'll have to buy small plants - it's too late for sowing seeds now for things like tomatoes and cucumbers. Some things though will be OK - I have sown spinach, runner and french beans and some squash in the ground last weekend. And salad veg like lettuce and rocket is always quick to take and so rewarding when you are making your sandwiches to take to work and just nip outside to cut a few leaves!

Whatever you do though you will have to move fairly fast if you want to eat your own veg this year. Try the veggie beginners thread which is usually on the first page of this board for some ideas of what to grow.

GOOD LUCK! oh and prepare to get addicted and also lose some of your precious weekends to a square of mud!!
