Right i can answer this question

Answer no it will not affect your credit rating as it's a debit card not a credit card meaning that the debit card is linked to your bank account and the bank is not lending money like on a credit card they would.

Thank you for that, at least that one thing off my mind.:T

I've had an electron debit card for years. The only place I can think of where I haven't been able to use it is for Tesco online shopping (possibly John Lewis online too); these days they're accepted just about everywhere, I don't even "check to see" any more.

Thanks, I know they are accepted more places that they used to be but as I live in a small town there are quite a few places I can't use it (such as the cheapest petrol station of the 3 we have) and also as we only have one expensive supermarket I need it for online shopping. Unfortunately the two online shops you mention are ones I use amongst many others. Choice is much restricted here due to location and would be more to with an electron card.:(

    OP,
I would also order your OH credit file and see if there is anything untoward on them.

Thanks have been debating this but that was why I wondered if I could press Barclays to tell us if it's his credit file or not so we wouldn't have to spend money on the credit checks. I don't think it can be that anyway as he got a credit card a few months ago without any problem. :)

The fact he got a credit card doesn't necessarily mean there's no problem with the credit checks. There are three credit reference agencies, but some firms only check with one of them. So, if the credit card provider only checked Equifax, but a default is only registered by Experian, that might cause a problem.

Checking your credit files isn't that expensive; there's a statutory fee of £2 per agency. With a bit of legwork you can get them for free - see this MSE article (scroll down to 'Check your credit files for free).

Barclays (and all other banks except Bank of Scotland/Halifax) no longer issue Visa Electron cards.

    You'll get a Visa Debit/Cashpoint card.

If it's not that then it's something similar as they told us on the phone yesterday it would be an Electron card and that it definately would not be a Visa Debit card.
