How to book holiday with 4 days in one city and 3 in another?

I havent been away for over 2 years now. Before my family would do all the booking so i never had to do anything. Now i would like to book for me and my best friend to go away together but spend 1 week in one location just seems very long and boring. I wanted to book 4 days in California and then a flight transfer to spend 3 days in San Francisco returning flight home from SF to UK. How would i go about trying to book this?
If i went to a travel agent they could probably sort this all out for me but i know it be cheaper online but how can do this? any help please?
Thanks

SF is IN California. Do you mean LA?
Have a look at Expedia and select Multi City.0 -
Also known as "open jaw". Most airlines also offer this on their booking engine
Alternatively check whichbudget.com and see who flies between SF & "California".0 -
opps yes thats what i meant sorry LA and SF.
Thanks will look into this. x0 -
We flew into las vegas and out of los angeles at easter this year. We first found the cheapest flights (which were both with virgin) then we put in multi city and put down dates of travel in and out picked the cheapest and then booked. Worked out at about 428 total. We then went on cheapest flights from las vegas to los angeles and booked direct with american airlines £48. I think expedia will get you the cheapest flights multi city. Hope this is what you wanted. We found it worked out cheaper to fly from gatwick and fly back into heathrow. As we were driving from up north we parked at Heathrow and got a taxi down to gatwick - this cost £70 but it saved us £90 each on the flights and there were six of us so quite a big saving. Just something to think about..0

Try Kayak's multicity option, thats the way I've booked all my open jaw tickets
Kayak will show you flights from all webistes (Including expedia) to find the cheapest0 -
If you only want to go between LA and SF it may be cheaoer to book a return to one of them and fly or drive between them (return)0
