Is it a big/messy job to add kitchen cabinet lighting?

I should have sussed this out before my kitchen was plastered and painted, but unfortunately I didn't.

If I've still to put up wall cabinets, will it be quite easy (for an electrician) to wire up some cabinet lights without messing up the walls too much? Possibly even do it behind where the cabinets will be?

I don't mind if the walls need a little bit of plastering again, but probably won't bother if it's going to make too much of a mess.

Also, does anyone have a rough idea of how much a spark would charge for this?

Shouldn't be too bad provided there is an accessible point to connect to. As for costs - it shouldn't be too much as its a fairly trivial job although will probably need 2 visits - one to put in the basic wiring and one to fit the lights after the units have been installed.

assuming you know where the live feed point is, you could install some conduit now. make good and install the cabinets/lights.
then you will only need one visit from the sparky.
    Get some gorm.

I am in the process of having my kitchen installed and as the electric work that I needed was so expensive (£400!!) I have gone for battery operated cabinet spotlights. you just stick them to wherever you want them and done, no mess and no labour costs. I got 9 spotlights in sets of 2 off ebay for £13.00. you can also get the motion sensor ones (also battery operated) that turn on when you walk into the kitchen or however you wish to set them.

I would really recommend this option.

if you type in 'kitchen unit lights LED' you will see a selection. the ones I bought had been used before so were cheaper and they were long bars with 2 spotlighs at each end, cant see anymore of these on ebay but I'm sure you can get them from lightling specialists or diy stores... hope this helps?

B&Q do a strip light set that you can plug straight into a existing socket.
