I bought an HP Simple save recently which works well.

Getting 500GB on a laptop drive for under £60 is not an easy job as they're not the cheapest of things.0 -
Ooh well if you're looking at spending about £60 then i'd suggest you might as well double up on the size to 1TB (1,000GB). I'm a tech geek so i've done a lot of home work when it comes to hard drives. Remember, don't pay £60 for a 500GB drive, that's very pricey for what you can get on the market. The cheapest reliable 1TB drives about is Westen Digital. They do the popular TV media boxes at the moment. Here's a link:

If you don't mind spending an extra £4 or so then i'd highly recommend this Lacie one:

I have the 1TB and 2TB drive and they've been good to me so far *touch wood*. Good luck!
p.s Unfortunately as i'm still a newbie, i can't post up full links. Just paste those above links into the url bar, they should work by default anyways. The best things in life are free0 -
Spongie just jumped on a very good point, are you after a portable or desktop drive? Do you need to take it around with you or can you plug it into a wall no problem?0

Hey Firedrone,
... oh yes, good point too, portable or external? If you're looking for a portable one then they would be more expensive. I have one which is just slightly bigger than a credit card and only 1cm thick, 500gb but cost me about £100 including the £25 duty tax as had it shipped over from the States. The drive is Toshiba and has a custom chassis hence the tiny size of it. I only need one usb port, it's a simple plug and play unit with no need for an extra plug or port. I bought this nearly a year ago so not sure if it's still available.

Heya,
Yeah the Lacie is really good even the design is quite slick, black with a neon blue glow on the underbody when swtiched on. It's not really big either just a little heavy, but if it's not going anywhere other than your desk then this is perfect. Hope it works out for you.The best things in life are free0 -
Any major brand will work fine and build quality is generally fine these days. Just be aware
If you get a large 'brick' type 3.5" one it'll be cheaper and have a larger capacity but be heavier and need a mains connection whenever you want access
If you get a smaller 'pocket sized' 2.5" one it'll be more expensive per GB but not need a mains connection to access as it's powered by USB alone0 -

now thats good to know one that wont require its own mains connector0
