First Great Western Bus - cheap options?

Hiya,
I'm unlikely enough to fall into the area in Bristol served by First Great Western who are notorious for charging an absolute fortune for their poor bus service. I need to travel regularly to Zone 3 outside the city and am a student, and the cheapest weekly price I can find is £27, making the journey a whopping £108 per month, coupled with the inconvenience, enough to make me wonder about buying a car!
Does anyone know if there's ways to get cheaper bargains or have First zipped it up? I can wait years for free travel when I become a pensioner (Like all the other people that use the bus) but I'd prefer not to!
Any help much appreciated!!!!
