Corroded Boiler casing - do we really NEED a new boiler?
The casing on our central heating boiler has corroded due to a leaky pump. Engineer says that although the boiler works fine we need a new boiler as the boiler is now unsafe. A quick welding job could repair the casing saving us over £2,000 on new boiler.
Its a Glow-worm boiler if this helps
Is this do-able or do current Health & Safety regs not allow?
thanks
Geoff

Did he give you a warning notice? Did he turn the boiler off? It is the actual removable casing that has corroded, and not the actual combustion chamber which holds the burner etc, thats actually corroded right?0

How does welding fix a corroded boiler?
Sounds like a sales pitch by the engineer to get the job of replacing the boiler.0 -

Could be a huge number of things.
How old is the boiler? Have you called Glow-worm?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
A photograph would help, if its just the removeable 'cover' and none of the operating parts/pipes/vessels etc etc that are affected it seems very strange and i'd be very tempted to get a second professional opinion0

Thank you everyone
Both outer casing and inner chassis of the boiler are corroded but not irretrievably. I could do a repair myself on the chassis and fit a new outer casing (I called Glow worm and both parts are available from Glow-worm fro £260 +vat)
Interior of the boiler has no damage. Seems ludicrous to spend £2k on new boiler both on economic and 'green' grounds.
Further comments appreciated
