How do printer measure the ink level, I bought a genuine CL41, (the higher capacity cart) about 6 months ago, ive hardly used it, but i do print out a nozzle check about every 2 weeks, to stop the heads drying out. Its now showing "Empty" does it go on a timer, or what?

What do you mean by hardly used?
You don't get that much out a cartridge these days.

But in all honesty it sounds like the cartridge was dud, that or the printer thinks its printing when it isn't.

I'm refilling the cartridges for my mp210 now so the ink counter is disabled ( perhaps you could try this) but my last cartridge lasted around 16 months and wasn't used for a 4 month stretch during that time.

Nozzle checks discharge a very high amount of ink, so if you've been doing that every couple of weeks for the last 6 months then that is where your ink has gone.

As far as ink level reporting goes, that is done by the cartridge itself (there is a chip on it).
Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.

But if you dont do a nozzle check, the heads will clog up, so its best to just print a random page off?

Surely the nozzel check itself doesn't use loads of ink, only if you clean the nozzles, Id have thought anyway. After all a nozzel check is just a printed sheet of paper, is it not?

I'm sure I'll be corrected here though.

Yes - if it's like my Canon, the nozzle test just prints out one page, so it shouldn't use too much ink. The cleaning function does use a lot of ink, and also fills up the waste ink pads.

Provided that you turn it off at the on/off switch on the printer's control panel, you should not need to worry too much about the print heads as - unlike some other makes - Canons have a physical cap that is applied to the heads as part of the power-off procedure.
