Quiting smoking via willpower alone
Comments
-
I quit 6 years ago and have never been back - despite many stresses. i went cold turkey and found Alan carr's book really helpful - it helps change your mindset about smoking - you're not giving anything up, you a freeing yourself of a horrible addiction.
Hubby also gave up at the same time - he didn't like the book and did patches and is also still clean from being a 40 a day man.
Now you are ready to stop you will find a way that suits you and succeed I'm sure
I also read the Alan Carr book, I know I can quit as I only been smoking again for a few months. It was the Alan Carr book that did it for me in the first place, I quit 2 years gone February, after reading the book the night before - it was easier than I expected and I didn't "crave" like I had previously. I think day 3 is the worst for me, always has been. I just remember I have a 30th birthday party to go to on Saturday night so I've changed the date to Sunday 30th.
As someone mention, about quitting at the start of the school holidays - I think for me it will be easier to do it when I don't have to go do 3 hour long school runs each day. The kids being at home will definably keep me busy, along with flyladies and gardening.
Thank you all for the Good luck vibes, going to be positive and say this time I will be a non-smoker:j.
I'm ready to quit I don't enjoy smoking but put it off as last time I put on 2 stone:eek:. I guess I gain more though and was a lot happier, I've set a date a few days away as last week I got back into the swing of healthy eating and I don't fancy chocolate (happens in spring time to me).
I will be doing gardening as exercise (it's a big garden and very wild).
If anyone has other suggesting's please feel free to add them....0 -
Good luck with it. It might be an idea to have healthly snacky stuff prepped ready rather than fret about weight gain? Cucumber sticks/carrots/etc.
Find things to keep your hands busy too perhaps. Go to places with the hildren where you can't smoke?'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need' Marcus Tullius Cicero0 -
I think I'll give this a shot, last time I tried to quit with willpower I got further than by using something. Only 5 days but it was good....
Am going to start tomorrow....try and smoke nothing at all (or as little as I possibly can)** Total debt: £6950.82 ± May NSDs 1/10 **** Fat Bum Shrinking: -7/56lbs **
**SPC 2012 #1498 -£152 and 1499 ***
I do it all because I'm scared.

5 days is better than none, I've been smoking on and off for years, longest I lasted was 2 years until I started again 2 months ago, OH warned me not to it started with a sharing a few cigs while drinking ... to having a whole one .... to always smoking when drinking .... to full time.... best thing is I don't normally drink but stress of new house lead me to that as well ... but I gone back to not drink the odd one now and then.... we had a BBQ on Sunday and I had 1/2 a glass of wine ... so at least I won't have the silly drunk voice saying it's only one what harm can it do...
I've added you to listGood luck with it. It might be an idea to have healthly snacky stuff prepped ready rather than fret about weight gain? Cucumber sticks/carrots/etc.

Last time I use to stick my hands in the washing up dish as I always have a ciggie after food. More breaking the habit of when I smoke than the addiction!
I have carrots / cucumbers / radishes in as I knew I was ready.
thanks for advise about taking kids out maybe a few trips to feed ducks is in order, I just leave purse at home.0 -
Hi huston_kw,
As Tia_Maria mentioned there is an existing support thread for people who want to stop smoking on the diaries board here so I'll move your thread over there once you've had some more input from the Old Stylers.
As others have said try to have lots of healthy, nutritious snacks to hand to keep your hands and mouth busy without putting on weight. I wish you lots of luck in your quest to stop.

I gave up 16 months ago.after being rushed in to hospital gasping for breath,I had been smoking for 46 years.
It was really easy ,I just wish I had known it would have been so easy,I would have given up years ago.

Right - I will join you!
I try to convince myself that I don't smoke very much but I'm up to about 7 a day again (bad for me).
After June I won't get paid until Sept unless I can pick up some temporary work so as well as health benefits I'm thinking of the money.
I have 1 cigarette left which I'll smoke when walking the dog after tea (my habit) and then I will do my best to not buy anymore.
Please give your support generously for us lot battling the evil weed!0
