Please can someone help me connect my new pc to my old monitor so it displays correctly.
PC: Dell XPS 7100. 1GB ATI Radeon HD 5870 Graphics Card
Monitor: Samsung Syncmaster 2053BW (A year or so old).
I cannot get the monitor to display at the correct resolution (1680 x 1050, 60hz)
The monitor has two inputs, a VGA input and what I believe is a DVI-D input, whereas the pc has a HDMI output and what I believe is a DVI-I Dual Link output - 4 holes, 2 holes and a blade with 2 holes either side).
I have tried to link the two with what a think is a DVI-D cable (2 squares of 9 pins and 1 blade at the end), this doesn't even display on the monitor.
I have managed to get the display working by plugging into the VGA socket in the monitor and using a DVI-I adapter (I think!) on the other end to plug into the PC, however I now cannot get it to display at 1680 x 1050, the best I can get is 1440 x 900. The option is not on the drop down list.
I have managed to get the 1680 x 1050 option by using the AMD Catalyst Control Option, however this will only display at 30hz and is completely unworkable.
I think I've updated the drivers.

Do you think that's worth a try.
The monitor worked fine with my rubbishy old GeForce 5200FX card, now I have a top of the range graphics card I can't get the resolution above 1440 x 900 or to even fit the screen probably.
I am sooooooooo frustrated.
The manual for the graphics card says:
Integrated VGA output- Max resolution: 2048x1536

Worth a shot. You could also try forcing the resolution with Powerstrip http://entechtaiwan.com/util/ps.shtm

Thats the other thing - the computer came loaded with AMD CCC which should allow you to change all sorts of settings on the graphics card.
I can't seem to access them, even on advanced setting.
Grrrrrr0
