Ipod showing full with "other"

Have reformatted my computer and am trying to transfer all my ipod stuff back across to my hard drive ( have got about 80% backed up to my MP$ player ) but really need to try and get it all back onto hard drive.
Last night my ipod wasnt being recognised on I-Tunes or on my Computer despite putting it into disk mode.
Looked at my ipod (80 gig Classic) settings out of interest and it says that 8 gig used for videos , 2 gig for photos and 5gig for music , but then states 64 gig for "other" leaving just 2.9mb free.
Never had more than 15 gig on it since had it from new 2 Years ago.
Does anybody know what this other is ?

thanks
