Hello
Someone threw a rock over the garden wall and smashed the outer pane of glass to my double-glazed window.
To replace it, do I have to replace the whole unit or can I replace just the pane?
I fear having to replace the whole unit is going to be expensive
.
Thanks.

Yes the whole unit needs replacing as they are sealed, however its not that costly, I replaced a small opener approx 600mm x 400mm myself for £20
What size is the window?0 -

When we moved into our house the kitchen double glazed unit had a integral ventilation panel in it which we wanted removed, my son in law measured the pane and was able to order the unit ready made , he then removed the pane by pulling out the a sealing strip and was able to put in the new sealed pane with a new sealing strip , I think he had a special tool to do it but its possible , maybe ask at a local glass shop they usually have glaziers/double glazers attached who can do this kind of job.. don't ring a double glazing company as they will no doubt convince you the whole thing will need replacing..#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Phone a local glazier or two (not double glazing company) and ask for a quote, it may not cost as much as you think."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

When I say the unit needs replacing I mean the whole double glaze unit - you can't just replace one side thats smashed as they are sealed to keep condonsation out - I think this is what the OP means. What your talking about is the whole frame as well (unless ive misread), The frame wont need replacing.
OP - Take the glass unit out (you say one side is still in tact) take it to your local glazers and get them to make you one to that spec - as Ormus says should be about 40 quid and really simple to fit.0 -

Ah I see. I got confused. I thought a unit meant the frame as well.
Is it easy to take out/fit in? I've no experienced at this sort of thing.
It's also on the first floor.“It was only a sunny smile, and little it cost in the giving, but like morning light it scattered the night and made the day worth living.”

If your DG window has a bead running round the glass holding it in (very good chance it will have) - then yes your laughing. Simply "pop" the side bead off then the other three will come out easily - "pop" your new glazed unit in and put the beads back on. Simples0
