tax credits - unable to be security checked?

Hi,
Phoned tax credits yesterday to give them my self employed figures (finally got through after 2 hrs), they then wanted to do a security check & because I'm not in debt & have no credit card I 'fall below the radar' it was not possible. I now have to prove to my local (20 mile round trip) office I'm genuine.
Does everyone get checked? My boyfriend didn't.
I feel annoyed that I have to go the the trouble & expense to prove my identity when I've done absolutely nothing to give them any doubt that I'm genuine.
