I've done the same as Kay this year. Chopped my bamboo back in March/April and kept the bigger bits to use as canes. Unfortunately mine isn't protected by a tench! The people who put it in before us weren't that sensible ...

Hmmm, it never occurred to me to grow my own! Must admit I know nothing about the plant itself, let alone that it grows everywhere. I've got enough of next door's ivy growing over/under/through my fence so I'd have to be careful with the bamboo!

Thanks for all your replies :D

Tbh its not a major problem. It stays in one area but when it spreads you will notice nodules of new cane poking out of the ground some distance from it. I noticed a couple a metre away from the main bush pushing up through. No biggie I just chopped them off at ground level. I don't think it needs any major care. Just chopping back in autumn or spring like any bush and water when weather is dry like now. Not sure how old ours is guessing 4-5 yrs. But make sure you have lots of space for it. A 2 metre slot should do :) And you'll be joining me ... when cutting it down ... wishing you had a panda!!!
