When I bought my laptop 2 years ago I got free security with NOrton Anti Virus. I renewed last year without really thinking about it but want to keep it a bit cheaper this year.
Reading Martin's articles Microsoft do a free version I'm tempte by.
Could people just reassure me that everything is ok with it and free is ok?

Or alternatively you could try avira.
Which ever you choose, remember to uninstall norton and run the removal tool (find the suitable one in the link below) as norton leaves things behind which slow down your computer.
